TIZ THE SEASON TO BE BITCHING…

Villagers as a group are some of the most unthankful and ungrateful people in the world. They have attained a retirement dream that the vast majority of people on the planet today could not reach no matter how many hours, days and years that they worked. Villagers live in luxury and drive expensive cars. They are well off enough to be able to WASTE tens of thousands of dollars on silly tricked out golf carts. They are well off enough to be able to eat the majority of their meals in restaurants. Several years ago the general manager of Villages radio station WVLG told me that the median household income in TV was $99,800! That’s double-plus the median income for the state of Florida...

SUICIDE BY GOLF CART…

All over Florida you will encounter what are called “Golf Cart Communities”. The vast majority of these are found within the gates of the various 55+ retirement communities although there are some to be found in a number of “all-ages” communities. Without a doubt the largest golf cart community on the planet is TV.

Most of these communities are gated retirement communities with populations ranging between 3,000-7,000 residents. The carts become an alternate means of transportation to friends, the pool, the tennis courts and of course on the golf courses all within the confines of the community’s gates.

In these smaller communities there are usually golf cart lanes on the main community roads, and the golf cart traffic is minimal at most...

GULLIBLE’S TRAVELS…

About the only equal to TV Myth Machine when it comes to flinging fertilizer around is the John Deere MS-14H manure spreader. It’s about the only machine capable of spreading a thick layer of bull shit as efficiently.

As it is in virtually any seller/buyer relationship the seller attempts to put the best, shiniest face on their offering. There’s nothing wrong with that. Anybody who’s ever gone looking for a job knows it pays to put your best face forward. Of course things change dramatically when things are badly overstated or the seller is outright lying about what they have to sell.

So it’s sort of fun to sit back and listen to the Villagers whine and gripe about what they THINK they bought into.

THE WAR BETWEEN THE GATES

TV and most other 55+ retirement communities label themselves as “Golf Cart Communities”. The title generally means that you’re going to find these machines that were once confined to places like Augusta National and En-Joie golf courses running around like so many ants at a picnic. They have gone from being a utilitarian electric-powered golf caddy to a statement maker. Take a lap around TV in any direction and you will see that golf carts are not just for the 14^th green anymore. I happen to think that the golf cart culture is outlandish idiocy but the Villagers have swallowed it all hook, line and sinker.

In the spirit of full disclosure we too own one. It’s a 24-year old base model Club Car. It serves one purpose and one purpose only....

A SWARM OF WASPS…

Whenever you drive through one of TV gateway roads you will see a big “Welcome To The Villages” sign. At the bottom of these signs there’s usually a line in smaller type that says “A Golf Cart Community”. If you don’t know what that means, you will, within minutes, find out.

TV is loaded with golf courses. For years TV has been an advertising fixture on the cable Golf Channel. At current count there are 44. 29 of those courses are available to all villages residents free of charge. Play whenever you want, as much as you want.
