AN HONEST MAN WITH SOME SERIOUS STONES…

Ed Wolf is my new personal hero. Ed is the long-time mayor of little Wildwood, Florida the small town that borders TV on its southwest side. In fact TV radio station WVLG is actually licensed to Wildwood NOT to TV. The reason for this is that unlike TV which is essentially a make-believe town, Wildwood is a real town, and the FCC does not license radio stations to make-believe towns. Of course the ONLY time you ever hear anything about Wildwood on WVLG is their top-of-the-hour ID which is REQUIRED to state the name of the town you are licensed in. Otherwise WVLG services the town of Wildwood not at all.

A couple of months ago the Morse machine came calling at the Wildwood Town Hall with a proposal in hand to buy up a parcel of land from a failed developer and build another 700-1000 homes. The hitch in the plan was that this land is not in some unincorporated space where TV could have gone to their personal slaves at the Sumter County government and get a rubber stamp for their project, they had to romance the little town of Wildwood.

Of course they expected Ed Wolf and the town council to simply fall on the floor and kiss the boots and the ring of Mark Morse the new king of Plasticville and get on with their project. But a funny thing happened on the way to a new section of TV. Ed Wolf and the town council told the Morse machine to take their development proposal and shove it!

The Morse machine was caught so off guard that the machine essentially stripped its gears! What? NOBODY tells Morse & Co. “NO!”. What? Do you-Wildwood-not know just WHO you are dealing with? We are the masters of the universe! We are THE VILLAGES! Who the hell are YOU to tell US-“NO!”??

Ed Wolf knew exactly who he was telling no. He was telling an organization who has no regard for the people of the counties that it operates in and an arrogant Villager population who sees all local-native people as insects to be squashed or as indentured servants who are here to serve the needs of their Villager masters.

In published reports the mayor openly wondered about what would happen to his community when the latest batch of arrogant spoiled-brat Villagers moved into his town and essentially started wielding their voting power to shut down the town of Wildwood and remake it in their perverted image.

Ed is no doubt familiar about all the comments made on places like Bitch Of The Villages and Villages News dot com as well as comments in The Villages Daily Sun about “those people” from Wildwood who are coming to use “OUR” square or shopping in “OUR” stores or eating in “OUR” restaurants.

“Those people” from Wildwood are often referred to in these enlightened on-line and printed publications as crack-heads, crack-whores, dirty, scum, criminals, drug addicts, welfare leeches and more. So why would Ed Wolf want to welcome in people who have already declared their deep and abiding hatred for the residents of his town? Why indeed?

Villagers on the other hand..being the shallow self-important jerks that they are always think that the influx of their tax money is the panacea for all. They think that no town would dare turn down their river of tax funds. As though they we giving these funds out of the goodness of their little hearts. Ha!

Ed Wolf and his council looked at what The Villages organization was proposing and they didn’t see the value to them. Mayor Wolf said he would like to see the property developed as it was originally intended for families of all ages. Something his town truly needs.

Wildwood like many small towns in central Florida is a bit down on its heels. In times past Wildwood was both a railroad town and an agricultural hub where farmers and ranchers came to trade and ship their goods. The CSX railroad still has a base of operations there, although the railroads being what they are these days don’t employ the numbers of people they did back in the 1950’s and 60’s.

Wildwood is managing, but like so many other small towns all across the country they are struggling. And..it is VERY hard to turn down the kind of tax revenue that would come their way if they did make a deal with the devil..er..um..TV.

But just like Sumter County who realized way too late that they had indeed made a deal with Beelzebub when they shook hands with the Morse organization, Wildwood can see what it means to sell your collective soul to TV. Fruitland Park on the other end of Route 466A from Wildwood is already finding out, although they have changed their policy on who can run for office in the town which will slow down the infiltration of Villagers turning their town into nothing but a vassal state of TV.

So Wildwood looked at the Morse machine’s proposal and said, no, thanks. This just shocked the machine to its core. It didn’t know what to do. So rather unceremoniously it folded its tent and went home.

The vitriol against Wildwood from the Villagers on Bitch Of The Villages and Villages News dot com was loud and angry. “How DARE they turn TV down?!?!?!” was the theme over and over and over again, although not anywhere near as politely put. The standard Villager name-calling was in full flush as the spoiled brats were busy stamping their feet because they couldn’t have their own way.

Man was it refreshing to see TV told to go to hell! What is also interesting is the knowledge that Mark Morse the new king of Plasticville, has neither the business or political clout the old man did. If you said no to big daddy Gary there was going to be a serious political price to pay. Central Florida is deep-red Republican country and Gary Morse WAS the Republican party in Florida. Few people in Florida..or for that matter in the USA could flex the behind-the-scenes political muscle that Gary Morse could when it came to Republican politics. If you were a politician in central Florida..which essentially meant that you were a REPUBLICAN politician..saying no to something Gary Morse wanted was essentially committing political suicide.

So it has been interesting that since Gary’s passing the mayor of Lady Lake has repeatedly voted against various requests from TV prefacing her vote with the remarks “that she is the mayor of ALL of Lady Lake not just TV”. Now Ed Wolf has told TV to go screw and it is quite clear that there is no longer the fear of political punishment by refusing to rubber stamp the desires of the Morse machine. It appears the new emperor of Plasticville just might be lacking a wardrobe.

I wish Mayor Wolf and the people of Wildwood well. I hope they do find a good developer who will build an all-ages housing development and help the town get back some of its luster.

But no matter what happens..Mayor Ed Wolf is my hero! Godspeed Mayor Wolf!
